Collaboration OOS SMF B.V. and Deltares

November 29th 2022

OOS SMF B.V. is in the final phase of the development of a semi-submersible mussel farm (SMF) for the cultivation of mussels in the North Sea and/or other offshore areas. In combination with offshore wind farms under development this offers many great opportunities and is fully aligned with the government’s wishes to use the offshore windfarm areas for multiple activities. Mussels are traditionally grown in sheltered waters such as the Oosterschelde in the Netherlands. However, the production of mussels in these areas is declining rapidly due to changing regulations and environmental/physical influences. Growing mussels at sea is therefore “The” solution to maintain and increase production and is also aligned with the current developments in the food transition, reducing CO2 emissions while creating a better and new environment for sea life.

OOS wants to buy cruise ship for accommodating Ukranian refugees

March 10th 2022

Serooskerke based offshore company OOS wants to buy cruise ship for accommodating Ukranian refugees

An ocean cruise ship that can accommodate nearly 2,000 Ukrainian refugees. Moore it at the quay in Vlissingen and Zeeland fulfills the urgent appeal of the cabinet in one fell swoop. Offshore company OOS International has already come a long way with this plan.

The idea comes from the think tank of the Veerse party “Hart voor Veere”, of which Leon Overdulve, the CEO of OOS is also part. He already has some cruise ships in mind the company could buy or rent to accommodate Ukrainian refugees.

OOS International is looking at, among other things, the former Superstar Libra, which is docked in Germany after the owner went bankrupt.

Permission to install the OOS Cees Leenaars mussel farm in the North Sea

March 9th 2022

Permission to install the OOS Cees Leenaars mussel farm in the North Sea

Offshore company OOS has been given permission to install a mussel farm within the Borssele wind farm: first step for mussel cultivation in the North Sea.

Cultivating mussels in wind farm Borssele 3: Offshore company OOS International in Serooskerke is allowed to start a mussel farm between the wind turbines.
A new branch of the company, OOS SMF, recently received a permit from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. This makes the Zeeland offshore company the first to be allowed to undertake fishing activities within an offshore wind farm. However, OOS will not do this completely on its own. It leaves the cultivation of hanging culture mussels to a group of Zeeland mussel farmers.

2 Years LTI-FREE Frida I

Monday 08 November 2021 marks a milestone of two years Lost Time Injury (LTI) free for the FRIDA I. It goes beyond saying that this is a huge achievement. It shows leadership and commitment from everybody involved: on board of FRIDA I, shore base in Ciudad del Carmen and home office in the Netherlands.

The first two years have been extremely busy and demanding for most of the crew. Typically, after an inter country mobilization, extended shipyard period, Covid-19 pandemic people movement impact and start-up with a new client we had to catch up on PM’s, start the in-between-well maintenance and adapt the rig to client requirements.

All above mentioned activities, and a lot more, have been accomplished safely and in a timely matter.

Our dedicated crews have worked hard and all efforts made have paid off: 730 days with an average of 25700 man hours/month, LTI-free!

The great efforts shown by the crew, the commitment to the operations, makes OOS quite confident about our ability to overcome any challenges in the future.

It speaks for itself that it has not been a walk in the park. Technical issues, minor injuries and small incidents have been a wakeup call. Regardless this, taking lessons learned and making corrective actions got us where we are today.

That being said, every morning when you look in the mirror remember: “This person is responsible for its safety today.”

We all know it’s an everyday decision if we want to make the day a safe and efficient day again.

Safe for you, safe for me.

FRIDA I (Vessel Management Team)

OOS International achieves Recertification ISO Standards

Continual improvement in Health, Safety, Environment and Quality is our prime focus. The company will strive for a Zero Lost Time Injury workplace, minimize risks and seek zero impact on the global environment.

We expect our managers to demonstrate HSEQ Leadership by setting a good example and provide coaching to pursuit safe operations offshore and onshore. This standard was proven by various departments within our organization during a 4-day external audit to renew all 3 ISO standards.

Recertification of the ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 was achieved and the merge to the new IOS 45001:2018 standard was accomplished.

Our performance was reflected by obtaining the certifications, International Safety Management Code (ISM), ISO 9001 (based on quality management system standard), ISO 14001 (environmental management standard) and ISO 45001:2018 for our organization.

OOS Group introduces the Semi-submersible Mussel Farm (SMF)

October 26th 2021

The OOS Group has developed a Semi-submersible Mussel Farm (SMF) to grow mussels in the North Sea.

Mussels are traditionally grown in sheltered waters such as the Oosterschelde and the Waddenzee. However, due to a lack of nutrition in these waters, the production of mussels has declined enormously. Farming mussels in nutrition-filled seas can be a solution to maintain production.

In collaboration with the shellfish sector and mussel farmers, OOS SMF has developed the Semi-submersible Mussel Farm, suitable for growing mussels based on hanging culture at open seas.

By applying submersible technology, the breeding and harvesting location at open seas will be protected against waves and storms. A suitable location in deeper waters can be used for the largescale cultivation of mussels.

The design philosophy of the SMF is based on the floater/column design of the vessels OOS Serooskerke/Walcheren, enabling the SMF to be submersed in harsh environments at sea.

With this development, OOS SMF contributes to the maintenance and expansion of the shellfish sector, allowing multiple mussel farmers to use the SMF simultaneously with technical and logistical support from OOS.

The first unit, the OOS Cees Leenaars will measure 76 mtr. by 32 mtr. and wind, solar and current power supply is implemented to allow charging of the supply vessels collecting and transporting the mussels onshore. With this technology, OOS aims for Zero Co2 emissions.

In 2022, a pilot will start, and based on the outcome of this study the SMF will go into production. The expectation is that multiple “mussel farms” can be implemented along the coast of Zeeland.

OOS Tiradentes achieved a score of 100%

After one year of operation under the new contract with Petrobras we are proud to announce that, the Tiradentes achieved a score of 100% of the Performance Evaluation Bulletin (Boletim de Avaliação de Desempenho), which resulted in the rating “Excellent”.

Right from the start of the new contract which included additional requirements, our offshore crew, onshore support team and CIMC worked closely to accomplish this performance, unique within the Petrobras fleet.

Despite all challenges of the Covid-19 restrictions, especially regarding crew changes and health & safety onboard, we managed to perform at the highest level possible.

Special thanks to Petrobras, for the huge effort taken to continue operations safely amidst a pandemic.

With new standards set and expectations created, we look forward to the Tiradentes’ next 12 months of operation.

Sea Trial OOS Serooskerke

Today another milestone was reached! The OOS Serooskerke is towed out of CMHI Shipyard to conduct the thruster installation and continue with sea trials in the waters around the archipelago Zhoushan. A special thank you to CMHI, Huisman, Thrustmaster, Kongsberg and Timothy Tan for working throughout the Chinese festive season. Also a big thank you for the continuous hard work and efforts of everyone who made this happen, despite the challenges that covid-19 has thrown at us.

Updates on OOS Walcheren

We successfully load tested the Superfly Jib of our Offshore Mast Crane #1 on board our Semi-Submersible Heavy Lift Crane Vessel, OOS Walcheren. We used a barge as the test weight. The ballasting of the barge started at 9am in the morning and we completed the verification of the test weight with ABS Classification, Huisman and CMHI at around 11am. With the Superfly Jib installed, it allows us to lift different loads over 140 metres above sea level.

Updates on OOS Walcheren

Over the last few months, construction and commissioning activities on OOS Walcheren has made huge progress despite the challenges posed by the global pandemic. Both offshore mast cranes (OMC) were successfully installed and load tested up to 2420 metric tonnes each using a barge load. This demonstrates the strong teamwork between OOS , China Merchants Heavy Industries and Huisman.

Each OMC (with wires reeved) was lifted by a 3000 metric tonnes crane floating barge and installed onto the OOS Walcheren in a single lift. The entire preparation and lifting operation took less than a day to complete but would never have been made possible without a detailed pre-lift plan and precise execution by the team. This includes weeks of preparation on the drawing table, online conferencing and on site surveys to finalize the weight estimation, lifting arrangement, risk assessment and project preparations.

Moving forward, the vessel will be busy with outfitting her offshore mast cranes with the super fly jib in August 2020, as well as working on her interior accommodation, marine and electrical systems.

OOS International joins a global decommissioning services consortium

A global decommissioning services consortium has substantially strengthened its capabilities with the addition of a specialist heavy lift vessel-owner operator, OOS International.

Dutch offshore services provider OOS International joins the already successful consortium, alongside industry leaders Lloyd’s Register and Worley, providing operators with fully managed end-to-end decommissioning, from late life through to post removal monitoring.

By pooling their considerable experience, global footprint and now heavy lift capabilities, the consortium has added further weight to its proven ability to reduce operators’ decommissioning burden, risk and cost, all through a single interface.

There’s still big business in offshore decommissioning but it carries risks An estimated £67 billion is expected to be spent on decommissioning globally over the next decade (Wood Mackenzie), with approximately £14 billion in potential decommissioning commitments over the next five years across Northwest Europe alone (source: Rystad Energy ServiceCube), costs which industry and the regulator have pledged to reduce.

Decommissioning, for many, remains an uncertain cost burden, potentially even more so in the current climate.” says Julie Copland, LR’s Decommissioning lead. “What is certain is that, with our combined expertise, unique ability to take well operatorship and duty holdership, and now ready access to heavy lift assets, our consortium can help operators across the North Sea, Gulf of Mexico and Asia Pacific reduce the risk and cost of decommissioning whilst safeguarding their reputation.”

De-risking removal and disposal for operators.

OOS’ fleet comprises of stable and dynamic semisubmersible dual crane vessels, the OOS Serooskerke and the OOS Walcheren, each have an accommodation capacity of 750 POB and a lifting capacity of 4,400 tons in waters up to 3,000 meters depth. In addition, the TBB OOS Zeelandia is equipped with two cranes with an impressive lifting capacity of 12,500T per crane.

Aligning assurance, project management, and safe, fit-for-purpose removal and disposal can make decommissioning daunting,” says Léon Overdulve CEO, OOS. “We already provide full turnkey decommissioning services. Now, as part of the consortium, we can provide economies of scale, reduce duplication of effort, adopt campaign approaches and enable schedule flexibility, further reducing cost uncertainty and scope for operators.”

John Cox, Global Decommissioning Lead, Worley [Intecsea], says: “As a consortium, we have completed successive offshore decommissioning projects, globally, from the Middle East and Asia Pacific to North America. We’ve supported operators and regulators with decommissioning and plugging and abandonment plans and guidelines, abandonment liability and expenditure evaluations. We’re actively involved in a number of full work scope provision projects. Operators see the value of our combined expertise across the full decommissioning lifecycle, because it works.”

Performance Evaluation of OOS Tiradentes

We are proud to announce the continuation of our high quarterly performance evaluations, presented by our client in Brazil, Petrobras. The OOS Tiradentes, our semi-submersible accommodation vessel, was graded “Excellent” with an overall score of 95.

With the continuation of these high statistics, we prove our consistency and dedication into unceasingly improving our services and management of assets to our client.

The “Contractor Evaluation and Performance Indicator” includes figures on procedures for Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ), safety statistics for personnel (Total Recordable Frequency Rates), and daily occurrences recorded in the vessels daily reports. It is nevertheless very important that zero accidents occur, that onboard personnel mobilization disruptions are below 10, and the occurrences of system and/ or equipment failure is reduced to a maximum of 20 items within said quarter.

With this score we demonstrate that OOS International delivers with distinction and will continue to do so. We would like to thank all onshore and offshore personnel in the achievement of this combined effort to receive this outstanding result!

Engine Start Up OOS Walcheren

On the 10th October 2019, the engines of OOS Walcheren were started. The OOS Walcheren is currently under construction at China Merchants Heavy Industries (Jiangsu) Shipyard.

The OOS Walcheren is the sister vessel of the OOS Serooskerke, which is presently undergoing the final stages of commissioning before heading out for sea trials. Her expected delivery is within Q1 2020.

The construction of OOS Walcheren commenced on the 24th May 2018 and it has taken 16 ½ months to start up her engines, which has bettered the OOS Serooskerke record by 10 days and less man-hours. The OOS Walcheren is on schedule with a 0.19% budget overrun. Many valuable lessons were learnt from the construction of the OOS Serooskerke, and preparations were made to ensure a smooth start of the engines with all the support of the auxiliary systems completed. The engine start-up would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the engineering team; without STX-MAN and the conscious efforts of the production and commissioning teams, this achievement would have been inconceivable. The team has worked endless nights together, with great spirit and collaboration to make this milestone possible. The piping systems had to be thoroughly flushed out and cleaned. The electrical systems had to be systematically checked to ensure all cables were terminated correctly and safely. The ventilation systems had to be cleaned, tested and run. The paintwork of the engine room compartment was touched up. STX had to spend numerous hours on site to perform the final checks and preparations to start the engines successfully. The OOS Walcheren is equipped with a SCR system to ensure the emission meets the tier 3 requirements.

It has been a long journey indeed!
504 days of construction
2.5 million man-hours spent
22,000 MT of steel used
212 blocks built

A lot of appreciation to the team and their big achievement. We wish them continuous success for the future milestones.
